Meet Jeffery

Jeffery, a proud Marine Corps veteran, served honorably as an Infantryman during the Vietnam era. Like many who have served, he carried the discipline, strength, and resolve that marked his military service into civilian life. But in 2020, Jeffery’s world was turned upside down. The COVID-19 pandemic took the life of his wife—his life partner and the primary source of income for their household. Her passing was not only an emotional blow, but also the beginning of a downward spiral of loss.
Shortly after, Jeffery lost access to his storage unit, which held everything from cherished memories to critical documents, including his DD214—the official record of his military service. The DD214 is a vital document for veterans, required to access numerous benefits, including housing programs and VA resources. Without it, Jeffery faced an even greater challenge as he worked to regain stability.
Despite these immense setbacks, JM’s determination did not waver. He held on to his home for as long as he could, but when a disability made it impossible for him to continue working as a delivery driver, he was forced to live in his car.
Jeffery’s turning point came when he was connected with the VetNet Program at Working Wardrobes. Through this partnership, Jeffery was referred to OC4Vets, where he began receiving the behavioral health support he urgently needed. These services became a lifeline, helping him navigate his grief and mental health challenges, and ultimately leading to stable housing at the Villages at Cabrillo.
Working Wardrobes also helped JM get recertified to operate a forklift—equipping him with a valuable skill and opening up new employment opportunities as he rebuilds his life.
Today, Jeffery has a roof over his head and is surrounded by a compassionate community that offers wraparound support. He is actively participating in employment services and, most importantly, has reclaimed his sense of safety and dignity. With renewed hope, JM is focused on the future—ready to start this next chapter of his life with strength, purpose, and a spirit of resilience that reflects the very best of those who have served.
