When George first came to Working Wardrobes in August 2024, he was beginning a new chapter after 14 years of incarceration. Referred through OC Probation, he was ready to move forward, but rebuilding a career after so much time away from the workforce would take support, resources, and opportunity.
Over the next two years, Working Wardrobes walked alongside George as he strengthened his skills, rebuilt his confidence, and worked toward greater stability and independence.
For George, having a place where he felt supported made a difference.
“Just having someone on your side makes you powerful.”
Through Working Wardrobes, George had access to employment resources, a welcoming space for his job search, and professional clothing. As he described it, “They always greet you with a smile. They hand you all the correct tools such as internet, a clean space for job search and clothing.”
Building Skills and Creating Opportunity
George continued investing in his future, earning certifications in defensive driving, First Aid, CPR and AED, along with his Medical Examiner’s Certification.
With previous experience as an Uber driver and a genuine interest in helping others, George found an opportunity that brought those strengths together: working as a Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Gurney Van Driver.
And he didn’t stop there. Over the past two years, George has advanced to become a Lead Gurney Van Driver, where he now helps train and support other employees. It is work that has particular meaning to him. “I enjoy my job because I like helping others,” George shared.
Paying It Forward
Recently, George returned to Working Wardrobes to renew professional credentials, giving our team the opportunity to see just how far he has come.
Today, he isn’t only building his own career. He is helping others move forward, too. George has referred friends and coworkers to Working Wardrobes so they can access resources and opportunities that may help them take their own next steps.
His progress extends beyond the workplace. George is nearing the successful completion of probation, has built a positive relationship with his probation officer, and has applied to begin the expungement process as he continues working toward greater independence.
George knows firsthand what it means to have support when you’re ready for a new beginning. His message to others considering Working Wardrobes reflects that experience:
“If you want to move forward in life, this is the correct program that will always have their doors open for you. No matter what.”
From returning to the community after 14 years of incarceration to becoming a lead driver, training others, maintaining professional certifications, and connecting people in his own circle with resources, George’s journey shows what can happen when perseverance meets opportunity.
Today, George isn’t just moving his own career forward. He’s helping others move forward with him.
