For five years, Derek Benson has played a pivotal role in shaping the culture and operations at Working Wardrobes. As our Chief People & Operations Officer, Derek oversees HR, volunteer engagement, and operational systems to ensure that both our team and organization thrive. His focus on strong infrastructure and workplace culture helps drive our mission forward, creating an environment where staff, volunteers, and clients can succeed.
Derek was drawn to Working Wardrobes by its mission. "The chance to make a real impact while building strong systems to support our team was an opportunity I couldn't pass up," he recalls. "Seeing lives transformed through our work inspires me every day." That passion continues to fuel his leadership as he strengthens the systems that keep our mission in motion.
Some of Derek's most meaningful moments at Working Wardrobes came during times of challenge and transition. He helped guide the organization through recovery after the devastating 2020 fire and the COVID-19 pandemic, and later played a key role in supporting the transition from our Founder/CEO's retirement to the onboarding of our current CEO. "These moments reinforced our team's resilience and deep commitment to our mission," Derek shares.
Beyond his current role, Derek's history with Working Wardrobes runs even deeper. Before joining the staff in 2020, he served on the Board of Directors for five years. This unique perspective has given him an even stronger appreciation for the organization's impact and growth.
When asked what excites him most about the future, Derek points to the momentum of this milestone year. "We're celebrating 35 years, rebranding, implementing EOS, and building systems that will sustain us for the future. It's an exciting time of growth and transformation, and I can't wait to see how we continue to expand our impact."
